Leh We Punta – Calypso Rose, 1987

,

👵🎺🎷🎹🇹🇹🗽 Calypso Rose is a living legend from Trinidad, where she has been making a name for herself since the 50s. Endorsed by Lord Kitchener himself, she performed regularly under his tent, in the calypso tradition of the time. Calypso Rose wrote her own lyrics, often engaged and militant, and quickly gained in popularity. She moved to New York in the 70s, from where she made frequent returns to Trinidad. The 1987 Leh We Punta is one of her international successes, in a very soca-oriented opus, with the title track, or Mama Coming Down which opens the album. The horns are sharpened and interact with both the organ and the DX7, whose brand-new sounds at the time are a real hit. A few years ago, Calypso Rose’s career was given a new lease of life, taking her to numerous stages around the world, accompanied by Grégory Louis on drums, among others.
