Espoir / Libreville – Hilarion Nguéma, 1968

,

🎤🎶📀🌍🎵 A little 45 rpm for the occasion and two songs that undeniably launched the career of their author. Hilarion Nguéma began singing in 1960, then set up the Afro Succès orchestra in 1962. But for reasons that remain obscure, the « powers that be » sent him to prison for several years. He was released in 1967, and returned to music with his orchestra: the two titles, Espoir and Libreville, a bolero and a cha-cha, were published in 1968, and very quickly became essential refrains that everyone hummed, and not only in Gabon, far from it. Nguéma has always defended the fact that he sings in French as well as in his native language, Fang, and this has certainly contributed to his international fame. But the melody and lyrics of the famous Espoir have largely contributed to the song’s success!

Tout l’espoir que j’avais,
Je commence à le perdre.
Il y a bientôt dix ans
Que j’attends
Ta promesse.
