Let Us Be Free – Jabula, 1975

,

In 1974, the four musicians of Jabula met in London, where they were living in exile. As South African musicians, they were fleeing apartheid, which also prohibited the dissemination of traditional music. Julian Bahula, Ernest Mothle, Lucky Ranku and Eddie Tatane released their first album – Let Us Be Free – in 1975, with its mix of zulu music, afro beat and afro funk (here the 1980 reissue). The band lasted until the early ’80s, during which time they also collaborated with Mike Oldfield, for example on the excellent Ommadawn.
