Haïti Chanté – Toto Bissainthe, 1983

In the end, there are relatively few recordings of Toto Bissainthe. After her first album in 1977, the Haitian singer performed at the Maison de la Culture in Le Havre in 1983. She was accompanied by François Perret, Françoise Lancréot and Raymond Betzi. The faithful Akonio Dolo and Marianne Mathéus were also there. Finally, Martinican pianist Claude Sommier rounds out the group for a particularly free live session combining voodoo tradition, traditional percussion and jazz. Captured for Le Chant Du Monde, this Haïti Chanté is a moment both surprising and bewitching, between incantations, declamations and nostalgic melodies.
