Débroussailler – Djene Djento, 1983

,

Djene Djento began his career playing with Salle John in the late 70s. The Cameroonian singer then embarked on a remarkable solo career, and if you pay attention, you’ll find in his voice some of the intonations of his first mentor. His first album, Débroussailler, was released in 1983, and is undoubtedly the one by which everyone knows him, published with the assistance of Douglas Mbida. The makossa on this album, under Manulo’s delicate acoustic guitar, is a fine example of the artist’s talent, and tracks like Miolo Ma Mbangisane and Nguma Penda have established Djene Djento’s reputation once and for all. Djene Djento released just under a dozen albums over the course of his career, before sadly passing away suddenly just over a year ago.
